    The primary mission of the 24 SOW is to provide Special Tactics forces for rapid global employment to enable airpower success. The 24 SOW is U.S. Special Operations Command's tactical air and ground integration force, and the Air Force's special operations ground force to enable global access, precision strike, personnel recovery operations, and battlefield surgery. 

   The position is an Active Duty Air Force Officer position, practicing as an Anesthesiologist at a Military Treatment Facilities. This is a direct hire position with full compensation, competitive pay, and benefits.

Qualification Basics

-U.S. Citizenship (No waivers)
-18-48 years of age. (Can be waived for older applicants)
-Pass a medical evaluation for military service 
-Applicants must have current, valid, and unrestricted state medical license to submit an application (Interviewer will explain.)
-Final Year residents may apply

Special Operations Surgical Teams, commonly referred to as SOST, are United States Air Force Teams of mobile surgical specialists with advanced medical and tactical training devoted to saving lives, anywhere, and anytime. 

SOST members are dedicated to their craft, their team, their patients, and to the mission. Their dedication is reflected by the SOST motto: "QUIS ILLOS BELLATORES CUSTODIET," which means "Those who care for the warriors."

SOST's provide four unique medical capabilities:
-Trauma resuscitation
-Damage Control Surgery
-Post-Op Critical Care
-Critical Care Evacuation

They train to support Special Operations Forces around the world. They are based at the 24th Special Operations Wing within the 720th Special Tactics Group. SOST Deploys as a six-member team composed of emergency physician, general surgeon, anesthesia provider, critical care nurse, surgical technician, and respiratory therapist.

SOST candidates are evaluated during a rigorous selection process. Individuals must demonstrate teamwork, critical thinking, high stress tolerance, effective communication, sound situational awareness, and leadership. New members go through months of advanced training to include: SERE courses, advanced operational and tactical training. Finally, they participate in full mission exercises with Special Tactics and SOF units from all military branches. 

SOSTs are elite Airmen and Physicians selected from America's finest and trained as air-minded special operators who skillfully and courageously harness the lethal effects of airpower for strategic impact.

Education & Training Requirements

     -Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from an approved school for allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.  

     -Completed a residency in family practice or board certification by either the American Board of Family Practice or the Advisory Board of Osteopathic Specialties

Graduate Medical Education (GME). 

     Applicants must be in the final year OR have completed a US residency and/or fellowship accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education in the specialty to which applying. 

Board Certification. 

     Board certification in the specialty in which applying is required. In a few instances, such as residents in their final year of residency training, this requirement may be waived. 

Work Experience. 

     Applicants must have at least one year of active practice in their specialty within the last two years. In a few instances, such as residents in their final year of residency training, this requirement may be waived. Residents in their final year of residency training may have certain requirements waived that are either not possible (e.g., board certification) or not routinely accomplished by physicians at this stage of training (e.g., independent DEA license).

*If selected, you will complete a 5.5-week Commissioned Officer training course where you will receive professional leadership training.

This is all available to you for practicing medicine under the authority of the U.S. Air Force.
